Henri Selmer
Is there a difference between Selmer and Buffet professional clarinets?

I play a pro-model Henri Selmer Paris 10S-II clarinet. I’m constantly hearing all this hype about the Buffet R13’s. Price-wise the 10S-II and the R13 are similar, both ranging from $3,000 to close to $4,000 when purchased new (depending on where you buy it).

I don’t have any complaints about the R13 (I tried one before), I’m just wondering why it’s considered one of the best clarinet models ever made, and if it has any advantages over the Selmer. I know most of it is up to personal preference, but is there anything about the clarinet itself that makes it preferable?

I currently own a Buffet R-13 and there is really not much of a difference between the two clarinets. A Buffet is made in Germany, and they are noted for their high quality clarinet-making skills. I think that is what contributes it to being the better models out there and the most well known (I don’t know anyone that owns a pro Selmer-made clarinet). In high school and middle school, I would see my friends in Band using Selmer beginners clarinets, so I would think that with Selmer being so versatile in levels of clarinets, they are not a brand that specifically specializes in these pro (step-up) clarinets like Buffet does. I hope this helps! :)
