what is the difference between “B100k” and “W100k” potentiometers-are the potentiometers inter-exchangable?

All I can offer is a guess – a possibility that you might be able to check out further. One way in which they could be different is in logarithmic vs. linear taper. Do you have an example of each one so that you could compare them with an ohm-meter? You could try setting the arm to the mid-point on both potentiomters then measure the resistance from the arm to one of the endpoints. If you get 50k ohms, then you have a linear taper. If you get a very different value, it may be a logarithmic taper. Perhaps you could measure the resistance of both potentiometers at various arm positions and see if they behave the same… Another imortant way in which they could be different is in power dissipation rating(!), so see if there’s a W (watt) rating on each.) Another shot-in-the-dark – could “W” stand for wirewound, and B for some other resistive substance(?). Hope this helps – but really, these are just guesses for you to check out futher…
